As a community, we have the opportunity to make our concerns known to the Board by attending the May 20th meeting. In the meantime, we can show our concern by signing the attached petition for submission to the City Council and the Mayor. Also, please contact the City Council and Mayor prior to the meeting…let them know that you want them to deny the Certificate of Appropriateness for this project! (Click here for contact information.)
Please join us!NOTE: Signing the petition will not place your name on theis website as an ‘initial supporter’. Rather, your name will be placed on a printed log and given to the appropriate city officials (City Council, Mayor, Zoning, etc.) as may be requested to give evidence of broad support of the concerns noted in the WeLoveHistoricCovington petition.
A Petition from Concerned Neighbors of St. Scholastica Academy
We are a group of Concerned Neighbors of St. Scholastica Academy. We are all citizens of Covington or residents of nearby communities who are very concerned about plans by St. Scholastica Academy to build a 56,176 square foot combination gymnasium and multipurpose building that backs up to South Jahncke Avenue between 20th and 21st Avenues.
The school’s current plan for the new structure will severely impact the neighborhood. Most of the green space that is currently visible from Jahncke Avenue between 20th and 21st Avenues will be completely and permanently eliminated. Also, unless the plan is altered two magnificent live oaks, the sentinels of centuries, will be cut down, never to return, and several others live oaks on and off SSA property will be severely cut back.
We stress repeatedly that while we are united in opposing SSA’s expansion plan, our opposition is limited to the plan as currently proposed. We are not at war with SSA, which is an institution well-deserving of the honor and respect it holds among members of our community. It is the scale of the SSA plan and the excessive imposition on the live oaks that garners our staunch opposition, and worse that the SSA plan sets a daunting precedent for future projects to bring similar destruction upon our beloved city. As signers of this petition, we request that you deny the Certificate of Appropriateness for this project.
