Alice Couvillon asked that we send out the following in case anyone would like an idea for what to write to the City Council/Mayor. Feel free to cut and paste as you see fit….
I am asking you to please write your council members and mayor to explain why you believe the 56,000 sq ft building proposed by SSA would be a destructive problem for the city of Covington. Please include in your email that we are not against SSA and that we are willing to compromise. In 2001 neighbors met with SSA to create a 10 year plan. The plan included a new gym and a multi purpose building. They have added about 20,000 more square feet to this original plan that we agreed to.
The supporters of SSA are using other large buildings as comparables.
The Southern Hotel is one of these comparables, but it is only 38,000 sq feet. The Masonic Lodge was built in 1923 and is much smaller than 56,000 sq feet. The School Board building is 56,000 sq feet but they saved a beautiful historic building when they added 33,000 sq feet. They also saved the beautiful oak. SSA plans to cut down 2 oaks that are alive and NOT diseased though they are claiming that they are diseased.
The public school gym at Lakeshore High, which is a standalone gym, is 23,000 square feet. The auditoriums at most public schools are 11,000 square feet. That is a total of 34,000 square feet which we agree is reasonable for SSA’s gym and multipurpose building.
***Please be sure you are clear in your correspondence to the Council/Mayor. It was mentioned to me today that someone who opposed the expansion had sent a letter asking that the “appeal be denied” – although it was clear from the details of their correspondence that they were opposed to the expansion.***
- Ask for the Appeal to be upheld; OR
- Ask for the Certificate of Appropriateness originally granted by the Covington Historic District Council to be denied; OR
- Just say you are ‘Against the SSA expansion project in its current form’
(Cliff Notes: Maybe just saying you are “against the SSA expansion project in its current form” is the clearest.)
This is an example of something that you can copy and send:
Please consider the tremendous negative impact that the SSA proposal will have on the city of Covington. SSA is a great asset to our community, but we feel that a scaled down version of their proposed structure would be much better for the city.
In 2001, SSA invited neighbors, school officials and friends to create a ten year plan which included a new gym and a multi purpose building. Everyone agreed to this. But, SSA added rougly 33,000 sq feet to this original plan.
The current plan is for SSA to build a wandering, 2 story building equaling 56,000 sq feet. The Southern Hotel is 38,000 sq feet. The Castine Center is only 28,000 sq feet. This building is much, much larger on a smaller area.
The new proposed Our Lady of the Lake church which was voted down by the Mandeville City Council was only 16,000 sq feet. They believed it would create traffic problems and tremendous stress to their infrastructure. SSA wants 40,000 More sq feet.
We would appreciate the creation of a scaled down addition to SSA’s campus. We believe a compromise is best for the citizens of Covington.
